Text Formatting

The Type Tool:

  • Type is a Photoshop tool to work with text.
  • It is located on the standard toll bar as  
  • Short key for this tool is the letter T.
  • Press Shift + T several times for more type tools.

Creating Type Layers:

There are two ways to create a text layer:

Point Type:

  • This option will create a type layer into a single line, type break lines must be placed by hitting Enter.
  • To create a point type layer select your desired Type Tool, Font family, Size, Color and click one time with the cursor anywhere you want to put the text in.

Click somewhere and start writing.

Character Panel:

This panel has many options for text formatting.

Character Options:

The character panel has several options formatting characters.
Option Function
Font FamilyTo select the desired font.
Font StylePick a specific style of your font.
Font SizePick the size of the font type.
LeadingSet the space between each line.
KerningAdjust the space between specific pairs of characters.
TrackingTo increase/decrease space between the letters in a selected text.
Vertical ScaleTo scale fonts with type height.
Horizontal ScaleTo scale fonts with type width.
Baseline ShiftAdjust the baseline move up or down relative to the baseline.
Text ColorAllows to change the color of the text.
Faux StylesThis row has multiple options to apply appearance of a character style.
Ex: Make text bold and italic, capitalize and small capitalize, superscript and superscript, underline and stike through
Open Type OptionsIncludes a number of special features for Open Type Fonts.
DictionaryHas many built in dictionaries for spell check.
Anti-aliasingProduces smooth-edged text making the text borders blend into background layer/image.

Paragraph Type:

  • This option will create a text layer with the text wrapping into a bound box.
  • To create a paragraph type layer select your desired Type Tool, Font family, Size, Color and click and drag the cursor diagonally.

Paragraph Options:

  • The paragraph panel has multiple options to format a paragraph.
  • Hover over the options for the description of the option.

Warp Text:

  • One of the features of the Type tool is the capability to warp any text layer according to the particular needs.
  • With the type tool in hand and the type layer selected in the layers panel, click on the warp text option 
in the options bar. A warp text dialog box will appear, choose from the various warping styles and apply.


  • Choose from the styles and click on it to apply to the text.



  • Adjust the bend, horizontal and vertical distortion options as per requirement.



  • After adjusting the options, click OK to apply the style selected.

Blending Options:

  • For more formatting to change the appearance of the text, right click on the text layer and select Blending Options.
  • A Layer Style dialog box will appear. Check the styles required and click OK
